In our fall poetry workshop, we will study one classic, fall-themed poem. Learners will understand how to refer to lines in the poem in order to discuss meaning and poetic details. Poetic devices and techniques, such as alliteration, personification, similes, and descriptive word choices and imagery, will be pointed out. This portion will be approximately the first 25 minutes of the workshop session. The second half of this workshop will focus on beginning to write your own fall poem, using some of the poetic devices discussed, and sharing what you have written so far. This portion will be approximately 25 minutes in length. All learners will be encouraged to ask questions and to participate in sharing ideas, responses, and in writing. Learners do not need to have any background knowledge in poetry, but, if they do, that is terrific as this workshop will allow them the opportunity to apply what they already know and then to go further. **NOTE ALL POETRY WORKSHOPS BY ME ARE INDIVIDUAL SESSIONS. YOU DO NOT NEED TO TAKE THEM IN ANY PARTICULAR ORDER, NOR DO YOU NEED TO TAKE ALL OF THEM. THEY ARE STAND ALONE SESSIONS.**
Learning Goals
Learners will develop an appreciation for a selected, well-known fall poem and will be able to identify key poetic features as well as explain the meaning and sentiment of the poem. Furthermore, learners will begin to apply some of the discussed poetic devices to their own fall poems.
