Students will observe and learn about things happening in nature. Observing nature is a critical first step for all levels of science and learning to be good stewards of Earth.
I have taught science and agriculture for many years as a high school teacher and now as a homeschool parent. I have always loved nature, but I became more passionate about nature study when I became a certified naturalist. I continue to learn more about nature as I regularly hike and grow a vegetable/fruit garden each year.
-Nature journal - Any notebook will work. I prefer to use a book with blank pages for drawings. -Local field guides and/or identification apps(optional) - Some students will find field guides or identification apps helpful as they learn the names of the things they observe.
There are many wonderful things to observe in nature, and some dangerous things too. Please learn about your part of the world with your child and how to enjoy nature safely. I encourage parents/guardians to teach their children to identify and keep a distance from dangerous hazards, such as poison ivy, poisonous creatures, etc. Local field guides and identification apps are a great resource.
