Molly Takes Flight: An American Girl Short Story
Class experience
Join me as we explore the character of Molly McIntire, the World War 2 era, and the WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) program. Prior to reading Molly's short story, there will be thought questions and discussion to engage the learners. An accompanying worksheet will be used to reinforce facts and connections to the character. The worksheet will be posted in the classroom the day of the class. Dolls are welcome to join class (but are not required) and there will be informal American...
I studied political science at the University of North Dakota and have homeschooled my three children for nine years. I taught social science courses at homeschool cooperatives at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels for three years, including a history course, 'United States History with American Girl'. I currently teach dance classes and social science based courses on Outschool. As a young girl I fell in love with the stories of the original American Girl historical characters - Kirsten, Samantha, and Molly. As an adult I have found these characters and their stories as an excellent means of connecting the youngest of learners to history and reading. As an educator with a focus on social sciences, I am continually educating myself through independent study, research, and online seminars and workshops. I have extensive experience teaching American history and its harder moments to all age levels. As a parent in a multi-racial family and a member of the adoption community, I have additional training and background in addressing issues of racism and traumatic loss.
Access to a printer for corresponding handouts (will be posted in the classroom one hour prior to meeting time)
American Girl characters connect learners to the past, and history can be filled with challenging topics and issues surrounding racism, discrimination, and inequality. When these topics are present, they will be addressed in an age appropriate manner with historical fact and sensitivity. We will discuss the darker moments of America's history, encouraging hearts focused on compassion and justice. Please refer to the 'Teacher Expertise' section for my training and background that prove beneficial in addressing such matters.
