US Grade 7 - 10
*** The summer sessions of this class are camp style. Note that meetings are held twice a week for two weeks with the last class being a double session. Check the times carefully on the listing. Join this model United Nations experience and become a country delegate for a session of intensive debates, negotiations and resolutions. Learners will gain a deep understanding of the UN, its purposes and principles, its workings and its challenges. The first two classes will engage learners in discussions as we learn the details of how the UN Security Council operates. Then, each learner will be assigned to represent a country within the Security Council during important negotiations to solve the problems of aggression between two nations as the UNSC delegates struggle to find peaceful means of dispute resolution. A fictitious conflict between two fictitious countries will be the scenario in which the delegates find themselves, as they learn to argue, negotiate, critically think, compromise and ultimately to come together to find a peaceful resolution. The final three weeks of the class will find learners engaged in a simulated meeting, representing their country as a delegate to represent their country at the meeting, making observations and suggesting Security Council resolutions. They will debate, negotiate and ultimately work toward a global resolution of the conflict. Learners need no background knowledge of the UN, as the first classes will work to provide the necessary background knowledge. Homework may be assigned, such as preparing their argument for the Security Council meeting or researching previous similar situations to come before the Security Council. The ultimate goal of the course is that the learners have so much fun that they can’t believe how much they learned during their time at Model UN.
