Description
Class Experience
Becoming news literate is incredibly important in our modern day democracies. The headlines pull our national conversation and attention. But, beyond the biggest headlines of the week are often important stories and events that affect us in unseen ways. This class comes to you from an international human rights lawyer and news junkie. It aims to pull one news story each week that has not necessarily made the front page but the context of which helps us to critically understand the world...
I am a human rights lawyer who has worked for or with the United Nations for over a decade (nearly two decades). I also teach human rights and international law at the University level and have been teaching geopolitical and news literacy courses on Outschool for over five years. I travel frequently for my work with the UN and stay up to date on news events around the world for my work.
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
This class is for older learners as it does cover current events that could be upsetting. For example, the issue chosen that week may involve a coup in West Africa involving violence, or mistreatment of migrants fleeing persecution. Parents should be comfortable with their learners analyzing weekly current events around the globe. The instructor takes great care to present the content in an age-appropriate manner.
Media outlets such as the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal will be used.
