This Language Arts class will cover a broad range of material in literature, grammar, and writing. Language Arts topics covered in this course include: theme, figurative language, types of conflict in fiction, types of sentences, and parts of speech, as well as spelling and vocabulary from the literature. Non-fiction writing assignments will cover genres including memoir, biography, journalism, and a persuasive essay. Many of the literature selections emphasize skills and insights learned from friendships between youth and elders. The class time will be devoted to discussing and responding to the literature selection, writing sharing, grammar, and spelling. An assignment sheet will be posted each week with grammar work, a spelling list, reading assignment, and writing instructions in preparation for a weekly at-home writing assignment. Between classes, students will be expected to complete literature readings and writing and work through brief grammar assignments. I will be available to meet individually for an optional 20 minute private tutoring session each week to give feedback on writing (students may also choose written feedback). I will also be available throughout the week via email or text to give feedback or answer questions on their independent work. Literature covered on this schedule: Weeks 1,2,3- Wolf Hollow Weeks 4,5,6- The Giver Weeks 7,8- The Housekeeper and the Professor

Teacher expertise and credentials
Jennifer enjoys sharing her passion for writing, literature, and the creative arts with students of all ages. As a magazine and commercial writer for national and international corporations and publications, she has relished the great privilege of a career spent stringing words together.
Her background as an elementary school teacher and near decade of homeschooling a brood of four rowdy loves has revealed both the joy and struggle of teaching. She embraces a philosophy of literature based learning with heavy doses of nature thrown in for good measure, aspiring to but always falling quite short of the admirable principles of her mentor, Charlotte Mason.
In her free time, usually eeked out in the wee hours of the night when she should be sleeping, she enjoys devouring library books before her toddler wracks up fines by putting pen and marker to their tempting canvas of pages. She would love to count your children among those she is honored to teach.
