In this semester long class, students will learn the basics of grammar that will help them build strong writing skills. The class will start with simple topics and progress to more difficult concepts. Some topics may be review but the class will go into more detail to make the topics relevant for the age group. This class can also be paired with Middle School Writing which will be offered in the 2nd semester of the year. The two classes combined together can equate a full year of Language Arts. 11 is a strict cutoff as the youngest age since some of the concepts can be a bit complicated. The topics covered are as followed: Week 1: Nouns and Pronouns Week 2: Verbs and Interjections Week 3: Adjectives and how to use them Week 4: Adverbs and how to use them Week 5: Prepositions Week 6: Conjunctions Week 7: Semi-colons/Colons Week 8: Commas/Comma Splices Week 9: Appositives/Subject-Verb Agreement Week 10: Fragments and Run-Ons Week 11: Types of Sentences Week 12: Active/Passive Voice Week 13: Direct/Indirect Objects Week 14: Verbals There no live meetings during this class. Each week, a video lesson will be posted which includes teacher instruction and PowerPoint slides. There will be practice activities throughout the lesson along with a detailed discussion of the answers. Students will be able to pause the video to work on the practice and resume play when finished. In addition to in lesson practice, there will be additional homework assignments to complete independently. Each student will be given private feedback on their homework assignments from the teacher. Teacher is always available for questions and clarification. In some cases, videos or outside graphics will be used but all will be appropriate for the age group of the class. I strive to keep things upbeat and fun while we learn. We will do some interactive activities such as internet grammar hunts, mad libs, and hunts for real life grammar errors. Students will also engage with each other in some collaborative activities as well as contributing to class wide mad libs to practice parts of speech. Students will also discuss homework assignments with each other and provide peer feedback.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I am a homeschooling mom of 3 children with a passion for and love of teaching. I have a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in English. I have experience teaching literature, writing, and Spanish courses at the middle and high school level. I also have experience teaching online courses at the college level. Overall, I have over 16 years of teaching experience. I love teaching literature, formal writing and creative writing classes. With the influx of technology, proper writing skills and format are being lost. It is important for people in all professions and areas of life to be able to write and communicate effectively in the written format. This is what I love to share with my students. Writing doesn't have to be boring and dry. Writing can be fun and interesting and best of all, creative!
I love reading classics and fantasy novels of all kinds. I have been known to profess my book nerd status to anyone who will listen, much to the occasional embarrassment of my children!
I also have a Facebook page dedicated to my Outschool classes. I would love for you to head over there and give it a like! I decided to make a Facebook page for my Outschool teaching. I will share classes that are upcoming and also announce new classes in the works. You can also reach out to me and make requests for times/classes. I have offerings for 4 yo-teen. I would love for you to give it a like!
