Middle School Book Club - Ancestor Approved
In this 4-week book club, we will be reading the anthology novel "Ancestor Approved" edited by Cynthia Leitech Smith. Along with reading together, we will cover middle school CCSS topics and create our own anthology creative writing piece.

This class will cover CCSS goals in Literature, Informational Text, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language. We will be covering the concept of anthologies, assessing textual evidence for contest, developing a central idea and character development, and produce a grade-level writing piece. While reading "Ancestor Approved", multimodal elements will be provided for students to dig deeper into their own learning including articles, discussion posts, videos, and activities. We will meet once a week for lecture and students are free to learn at their own pace during the week. Student grading and assessment is available upon request, as well as any needed writing support during the class.

Students will be introduced to the concept of an anthology along with an introduction to theme and cultural significance. Students do not need to begin reading before this class

As we dig deeper into the stories, we will use critical thinking to piece the stories together. Students will be provided with grade-level work and multimodal elements to enhance the cultural significance of the story.

Brainstorming
As we keep reading, students will continue to think about stories that they love and begin writing their own anthology piece.

Lesson 4:
Wrapping up
Now that we have finished reading the book, students will put together their own writing about stories that are meaningful to them. Final writing support and guidance will be given as well as a list of more elements for students to dig deeper and facilitate their own learning.
