Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Beginner - Advanced Level
In this ongoing one to one class, learners will explore and practice math topics specifically chosen based on their interests, needs, and goals, such as arithmetic calculations, algebraic reasoning, geometry, data analysis, or logic and proof. Learners or their parents will need to communicate in advance about goals so plans can be customized accordingly.

For example, learners might investigate and practice topics such as:
* multiplication strategies
* classifying quadrilaterals
* solving algebraic equations by visual methods
* average rate of change of a function across an interval
* types of averages (mean, median, mode)

Classes will be held twice a week and each class will be a 50 minute lesson. Activities will be selected from review of previously learned skills, problem-based exploration, formulation of transferrable strategies from particular problems, practice of formulated strategies, or help with problems assigned by another teacher or from a parent-selected curriculum package. Depending on the topic at hand and the learner's needs and preferences, we might use the Explain Everything Whiteboard as a shared writing surface, GeoGebra geometry and calculator webapps, or Google Sheets for data analysis and calculation automation. Students might access practice assignments during or between classes using TeacherMade or Happy Numbers.

Parental Guidance
TeacherMade is a site designed for school use which allows learners to access and complete worksheets, tutorials, and practice problems. If they wish, such as for added privacy, learners can sign in using a nickname or pseudonym. GeoGebra is a free, open-source math calculator, graphing calculator, and dynamic geometry site. Learners do not need an account to use it. Google Sheets is a free cloud-based spreadsheet site, part of the Google Suite. I will provide links to blank sheets or sheets with preloaded data, with editing permissions, so learners do not need their own accounts and I can help them with troubleshooting. Explain Everything is a shared whiteboard, similar to Google Jamboard but more flexible. Learners do not need an account and can access the board to write on it through a link. Learners who do not specifically want to write on the board don’t need to access Explain Everything at all – I will share the screen in Zoom and they can watch. Happy Numbers is a math practice site designed for school use. Bolster Academy is a math practice site designed for school use. myOpenMath is a math practice site designed for school use. Mathigon is an virtual manipulatives site. It can be used without an account. Octave Online is a webapp implementation of the free open source Octave mathematical programming software, which runs code in the same language as MATLAB. It can be used in command line mode without logging in, but to save scripts an account is needed.
