This on-going class is offered both once a week, twice a week and as a FLEX class. ***This class listing meets once per week.*** Learners will interact with both teacher and other students to solve two-digit addition and subtraction problems. We begin class with a minds-on picture to elicit math talk and sharing followed by mental math practice focusing on a specific strategy each week. Learners should have a basic understanding of making tens and place value (tens and ones). We will use this thinking to break apart numbers and develop strategies to solve mental math equations and the relationship between addition and subtraction. Math problems are strategically chosen to focus on building a specific strategy each session. Strategies do not build on each other but rather provide multiple ways to think about numbers. Learners are welcome to join in for one session or stay for many sessions. Math Talks classes focus on sharing math thinking in a safe space with an emphasis on making sense of mathematics. We will draw out student thinking to allow students to "see" the math, make connections and deepen their understanding of number. Studies show that memorization and drills don't work for all children. This class provides a different approach to building skills and confidence in mathematics. When learners understand numbers and how they work...they have the skills to solve math problems in a way that makes sense to them. Learners will leave class feeling confident about their new math thinking! ***Each session focuses on developing a specific computation strategy. Strategies do not build on the previous week. Although the following focus strategies will cycle every four weeks, each session is unique with new content.*** Week of: July 4 - Place Value July 11 - Adding/Taking Away in Chunks July 18 - Friendly Numbers (Doubles and Tens) July 25 - Adding Up

I am passionate about the importance of a positive mindset towards learning and specialize in math instruction and inquiry-based learning. I offer classes in that inspire critical thinking while building math understanding. I am passionate about engaging math instruction where learners feel safe to take risks and make mistakes while thinking flexibly about numbers.
