On-going assessment by the teacher will inform the types of math questions presented during the lesson. If students are grasping the concept quickly, questions will increase in difficulty. If students are struggling, more time will be given with the strategy.Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 4
This 4-session course focuses on developing multiplication and division mental math strategies to solve more difficult problems. Learners should have some understanding of basic multiplication and division facts. This bootcamp doesn't drill the basic facts! We don't rely on memorization and students are welcome to make mistakes. We create a class experience where learners feel comfortable to take risks, make mistakes, ask questions and build their math thinking. Our classroom welcomes ALL learners. We will interact with both the teacher and learners to solve multiplication and division problems. Math problems are strategically chosen to focus on building specific strategies each session. This class will focus on sharing math thinking in a safe space with an emphasis on making sense of mathematics. We will draw out student thinking to allow students "see" the math, make connections and deepen their understanding of number. We will also use everyday images to talk about math. Studies show that memorization and drills don't work for all students. When students understand numbers...they have the skills to solve problems in a way that makes sense to them. Students will build a math mindset that will give them the confidence to be the best that they can be! The focus strategy for each lesson is listed below. Previous focus strategies will also be reviewed. Lesson 1 - Landmark and Friendly Numbers Multiplication Strategy Lesson 2 - Partial Quotients Division Strategy Lesson 3 - Partial Products Multiplication Strategy Lesson 4 - Multiplying Up Division Strategy
