“Math Games: Coordinate Plane Battleship” offers an interactive approach to learning how to graph. Learners will discuss coordinate planes, graphing, gathering data, and real-world examples of usage. Learners will plot points, and will together reveal mystery pictures. Finally, we will play Battleship using coordinate planes and ordered pairs.
Learning Goals
Learners will discuss coordinate planes including terminology used to graph: origin, x-axis, y-axis, coordinates, ordered pairs, quadrants, and negative/positive numbers.
Learners will identify where and why graphing is used in daily life.
Learners will apply understanding of graphing using a coordinate plane by plotting points to reveal mystery pictures and by playing Battleship.
Learners will focus on using the first quadrant but will be given examples plotting coordinates on the other three quadrants as time permits.
Learners will be given additional resources and games to use after class to continue to reinforce skills learned.
