Beginner Level
In this four time class, the students will use SUBITIZING (pronounced suh bitizing) to increase and strengthen their number fluency and sense of numbers. Becoming fast and fluent with numbers and dot images is important for a strong math foundation. Students will become proficient at looking at dominoes or dice and seeing the total in a snap, rather than counting all the dots. The class will begin with a variety of games such as quick image, ten frame fun or ladybug flash. The students will see dots quickly and then recognize and say the total as well as draw to show what they saw. Most importantly, the students will have many opportunities to explain their thinking and use words to say what they saw. They will compose and decompose numbers using dot images. Feel free to sign up for this class at any time, as the lessons do not build on each other. Week 1: Quick Image game with Dominoes and Doubles Drawing Week 2: Quick Image Tens Frame game and Ten Rainbow Drawing Week 3: Quick Image game and In and Out Game: How many am I hiding? Week 4: Quick Image game and Red/Black Game and draw what you see

Hi! Welcome to my Outschool classroom.
My name is Betty Nilssen. 💕
I have a BS in Elementary Education with a minor in Spanish from UW-Milwaukee. I am a first grade teacher, but I have also taught second, third and fourth grade, full inclusive classrooms. My passion for teaching reading while incorporating phonics, phonemic awareness, rhyming, comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, science, social studies, math, drawing and writing helps children strengthen their academic skills while they gain academic confidence and a love of learning. Teaching reading is my super power.
However, I always incorporate math, writing, drawing, social studies and science into all of my lessons, as well.
I have three adult daughters and two of them are teachers. My mom was also an educator.
There are so many books to read, words and sentences to write, math equations to solve and fiction and non fiction pictures to draw. Let's get started!
Enroll your Early Childhood Education student and your child will further develop an academic foundation and gain academic confidence with a love of learning. Your child will be a life time reader!
Feel free to reach out to me with any questions or if you are looking for different times or dates for classes.
I can't wait to work with you and your child and further a passion for learning!
