Course Overview: This rigorous self-paced course will teach students essential strategies for excelling on standardized tests. The focus will be on reviewing critical reading and writing skills, including understanding tone, identifying the main idea, recognizing themes, discerning the author’s purpose, and writing effective paragraphs. Topics: -Understanding and applying paragraph structure -Identifying and analyzing tone, author’s purpose, plot, claim and evidence, central idea, theme, and supporting details -Applying test-taking strategies when answering multiple-choice questions -Applying writing approaches for open-ended questions Course Structure: The course is divided into several interactive modules, each focusing on a key aspect(s) of standardized test preparation. Each module will include a mix of interactive demonstrations, practice exercises, and interactive feedback sessions. A self-reflection writing activity is also included. Teaching Methods & Interactions: -4 Interactive Pre-recorded Demonstrations: Concise video demonstrations to explain concepts, processes, and strategies. -4 Mock Standardized Test Practice Exercises: Hands-on practice including drag-and-drop activities and multiple-choice and/or open-ended questions to reinforce learning. -Interactive Feedback: Solutions on practice exercises to help students improve. -Self-reflection Activity: Based on lessons learned during each section of the course. -Slides and Video Clips: Visual aids to enhance understanding of key concepts. Teaching Style: Our teaching style is student-centered and interactive, emphasizing the practical application of strategies through engaging activities and continuous feedback. We aim to create a supportive learning environment where students feel confident as they answer guided questions.
