Mastering Multisyllabic Words: A Reading Intervention for 4th–6th Graders

This 6-week small group reading intervention is for 4th to 6th graders struggling with grade-level fluency and accuracy. We focus on decoding multisyllabic words, reading speed, and vocabulary through research-based strategies.

30 live meetings

Mastery Evaluation
1 hour per week. Fluency practice for the Curriculum Embedded Online Assessments which include spelling, oral decoding, morphology, and vocabulary.
Assessment
Students take the curriculum-embedded assessment every 5 lessons and the results will be sent to the parents.

Learning Goals:

Decode Multisyllabic Words: Students will learn to break down and read multisyllabic words (containing 2 to 8 syllables) using systematic decoding strategies, improving their ability to tackle unfamiliar and complex words.

Improve Fluency: Students will practice reading both narrative and informational texts aloud with improved accuracy, speed, and expression, aiming to increase their words-per-minute rate while maintaining comprehension.

Expand Vocabulary: Students will develop their academic and domain-specific vocabulary, particularly with words commonly found in grade-level subjects such as science, social studies, and health.

Enhance Comprehension: Students will work on answering text-dependent comprehension questions with greater ease as their decoding accuracy, vocabulary knowledge, and reading rate improve.

Master Spelling of Multisyllabic Words: Through focused practice, students will improve their spelling of multisyllabic words, particularly those found in grade-level texts, reinforcing their understanding of word structure.

Build Reading Confidence: By the end of the course, students will feel more confident in reading and understanding grade-level texts, helping them engage more successfully with classroom materials.

 In this lesson we will complete: Program introduction, oral blending of word parts, intro to vowel combinations, practicing vowel conversions, reading word parts, decoding 2-3 syllable words, identifying the vowels in words, making close approximations, identifying the prefixes and suffixes in long words, reviewing the meanings of prefixes and suffixes, spelling dictation, and academic vocabulary.

Learning Needs
Students need to be proficient in 1st grade phonics skills. We will review short and long vowels, vowel team patterns, and the six syllable types as a foundation for building fluency and comprehension with mutisyllabic words.
