Beginner Level
Students will explore the use of figurative language throughout literature. They will also practice their creative writing skills in culminating projects each week. These tasks will prepare them to analyze a text of their choosing for their final project. By the end of the course students will have a deeper understanding of the uses and types of figurative language and be able to apply those teachings to their own writing.

over 8 WeeksLesson 1:
Introduction to Figurative Language
We will focus on the different kinds of figurative language. By the end of this week students will successfully identify figurative language in context. Using materials provided, students will identify figurative language in context. Week 1 project: write a short poem using at least three different kinds of figurative language.
Lesson 2:
Similes & Metaphors - What's the Difference?
Students will learn the differences between similes and metaphors and how they are used to shape texts. Using selected texts, students will analyze the author's use of figurative language and discuss how those choices affect the mood of the piece. Week 2 project: Students will write a short story using descriptive language and similes and/or metaphors to describe the scene.
Lesson 3:
Personification - Bringing Words to Life!
Authors use personification to give objects, scenes, and actions human-like attributes. Students will explore the use of personification within poetry. Week 3 project: complete assignments changing "boring" sentences into colorful sentences using personification.
Lesson 4:
Hyperbole & Understatement - The Art of Exaggeration
Let's talk about how exaggeration displays humor, emphasis, and irony within a text. Students will understand how to recognize hyperbole and understatement in writing. We will explore how well-known authors use these tools to set the mood in their writing. Week 4 project: Write a humorous, persuasive essay using hyperbole and exaggeration.

Students should have some understanding of figurative language, but it is not required.

I am a creative writer by nature and have worked on many projects including a novel or two. My Bachelors degree was in English with a focus in creative writing. Additionally, I am an ELA teacher at the secondary level.
