Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 2
Beginner Level
As a former elementary classroom teacher for 27 years, I am very passionate about teaching and enjoy sharing my excitement about learning! I take pleasure in teaching and I am patient working with the children. Each child is unique and no two learners are alike. One student may learn quicker than a classmate but I believe all children have the potential to learn. I have high expectations for all students and I do not limit their learning. I will encourage all my students to grow to his/her fullest potential! I love to teach children and get them excited about reading and their learning. I want to help my learners to have a strong foundation in reading so they will never experience the struggles I went through as a child, with no phonics instruction. I want to engage the learners in activities so they will enjoy learning.

In these classes, I will use screen sharing of interactive slides I have created. Two of the slides will be downloadable activity sheets the teacher and students will do together in class. In this Ongoing class, students will be introduced to 2 digraphs or blends per class. First, the children will hear and see a story with the blends/diagraphs. The students will use the pictures and other clues to help me find the words from our word family. Students will learn to sound the word out. Next, the students will take turns to help to identify which letter they need to write to make the word that is on their downloadable activity sheet. If the student does not have this sheet, they can use a plain piece of paper to write the words. The teacher will teach the students the correct way to write their letters as they would learn in the regular classroom. Next, the students will take turns to help to identify and practice writing the 2 letter blends/digraphs they need for each picture to complete the word. If the student does not have this activity sheet, they can use a plain piece of paper to write the words. The teacher will teach the students the correct way to write their letters as they would learn in the regular classroom.

In the third activity, the students will need to look at the word and find another word that begins or ends with the same 2 letters blend/digraph. Last, the students will help the teacher decide which word from our word family, is needed to complete the sentence. ESL students are welcome! I have taught ESL students for many years in the classroom and Online with students from Asia.

**Digraphs are two letters that make just one sound. Example: SH in the word “shirt” and WH in the word “whistle". Blends, on the other hand, are two or more consonants that BLEND together but each sound can still be heard. Example: SL as in "sled".

Weekly, two activity sheets can be printed that will be used in the class. If you do not have a printer, a blank piece of paper will work. Every student will have many opportunities to help give answers in class and be actively engaged in their learning. No prior knowledge is needed to enroll in this ongoing class. These class sessions do not build upon one another so, therefore, no prior class is needed to enroll at any time. Students will increase the number of words they can decode by adding common digraphs and blending other letters.

The following order below is what Digraph or Blend family we will start with. This class STARTS over after we have completed the cycle listed below in case your child starts after the session first began.
