US Grade 4 - 7
Beginner Level
Sunsets are such great subjects to paint, and a great way for students to learn the concept of silhouette ( a shape looking solid black because the light source is behind it). Week 1Lesson 1Paint the SunsetStudents will learn and practice "sunset order," or the part of the spectrum that is commonly visibly during a sunset. Students will practice painting with watercolors in a wet-on-wet technique that enables them to blend colors and hopefully reduce or prevent the appearance of solid lines of color. Students will learn about silhouettes: how and why objects appear black and solid with no discernible details when the light source is behind them.Week 2Lesson 2Paint a SilhouetteStudents will select an appropriate shape, structure, landscape or landmark for their silhouette. Students will either paint their silhouette or draw on black paper, cut out and glue. Details, such as very thin lines and tiny shapes, can be added with a thinline black marker if desired.
As a licensed art teacher, I have developed techniques for breaking down drawing and painting lessons into simple, easy-to-follow steps. Once we get the basics done, I give my students freedom to complete their project using their own imagination, thereby giving them the opportunity to take what I have taught them to a different, fun and creative level.
