Class Experience
Beginner Level
Molecules make up our entire world, and atoms make up molecules. In this course, students will create clay atoms and then use them to build 3-4 new clay molecules each week. Molecules will range from the simple (water, carbon dioxide) to the complex (sucrose) and everything in between. This class is perfect for students who are interested in chemistry and just starting to learn about atoms and molecules. Each week in the classroom, there will be several videos and handouts posted. Video 1 will be information about that week's molecules- their chemical formula, uses, discovery, and importance. Video 2 will walk students through how to build the molecule. For each molecule, we will look at the chemical formula, determine how many of each atom will be needed, and then build the actual structure. Handout 1 each week will be a guided notes sheet on the structures and uses of each molecule. Handout 2 will be a template to make molecule trading cards- students will draw (or take) a picture of the molecule, and then fill in information about its chemical formula and uses. Additionally, each week, students will have the opportunity to post on an "Ask Me Anything" thread- where they can ask me their chemistry-related questions and I'll answer them via recorded video. All videos in this course are created by the instructor and are uploaded as a link to an unlisted YouTube video. Schedule: Week 1 - water, ammonia, ethylene, benzene Week 2 - carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, sulfur dioxide Week 3 - hydrochloric acid, carbonic acid, urea, glucose Week 4 - vanillin, ethyl butyrate, malic acid, caffeine

Supply List
Learners will need clay and toothpicks each week. (Air dry clay works well but other types of clay can work too) They will also need paper (or that week's printouts) and something to write with. The course material can be completed without the use of a printer.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Pennsylvania Teaching Certificate in Science
I am a certified chemistry teacher (grades 7-12) with almost two decades of teaching experience. I have 7 years of experience in the high school classroom and four years of experience teaching online through Outschool. I have also done private tutoring at the high school and college level, taught freshman college chemistry recitations and labs, and worked in various science outreach settings including museums, middle school after school science programs, and science summer camps. From these experiences, I have worked with a lot of different types of learners at various stages of interest, ability, and motivation- from preschoolers wide-eyed at everything in science to high school students simply taking the class as a requirement to college freshmen chemistry majors passionate about the course with never-ending questions. I can tailor my teaching style to fit the learner, and I do what I can to make it approachable by anyone.
