Class Experience

In this lesson, the young learners will learn how to identify and read a simple map. We will use a few different maps to show how advanced they can become. This is an introduction to cartography for younger children. We will start the class off by introducing ourselves by name and where we live. By using different maps and an end of class drawing activity, each learner will be able to understand the main parts needed to create a map of their own. The elements we will be identifying include: legend/key, scale, title, symbols, and compass. In addition, we'll talk about how and why we need to use maps. We will start class, introduce ourselves, listen to see and hear the different elements of a map, have a question and answer to test the retention of each element, and create our own maps at the end. I really enjoy having more open discussions throughout lessons, so please encourage your learner to share what they know or want to know about maps.

Other Details

Supply List
I encourage each learner to bring a ruler, colored pencils, markers, or crayons, and paper. Learners may also use markers and dry-erase boards if they prefer. If the learner is able to find a map before class, we can use it as a show and tell to discuss and describe what we see.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Welcome! My name is Teacher Emily. I have been teaching for the last 10 years in many different environments. I have worked as an autistic support aid, merit badge counselor and resident camp director for the Boy Scouts of America, in addition to a young toddler and a preschool teacher. For 2 years I worked from home as an online ESL teacher for students who live in China. I am currently a Childcare Provider, Early Intervention Provider, in addition to managing and operating a school age summer camp and a respite summer camp.

I have my associate's degree in Early Childhood Education, Pre-k thru 4th, my bachelor's degree in Geography, and intend on completing my master's program in Environmental Education within the next few years. I find it valuable for students to learn in an inclusive manner, that allows them to explore the environment around them while thinking outside of the box. In my courses, we will explore the topics of our earth including but not limited to: map making, map reading, natural sciences, cultural geography, physical geography, people and geography, and many more. Come learn with me!
