Class Experience

This one time web design course is great for those curious minds who have never played with coding before and would like to explore. We will watch a short (5 minute) but very popular video shown in Computer Science classes all around the world called "What Most Schools Don't Teach" by Code.org which discusses the importance of learning to code featuring some well know figures. The link is posted under Sources in this class and I encourage parents to watch it. Students will take 5 minutes during class to watch the video themselves while answering questions, so watching it before class is not necessary.

Critical Questions Covered:
- What is HyperText Markup Language (HTML)?
- What is a web browser, and how does it read HTML?
- How do we use HTML to make a website?
- What is an HTML tag and element?
- What is nesting?
- What is the difference between Semantics and Syntax?
- Why is it important to just search (Google) how to code an idea of yours instead of trying to figure it out yourself?

There is a small slideshow section, but the majority of the lesson will be taught with an overhead whiteboard camera where I can bring figures, images, and drawings for everyone to see and bring up discussions with. Once the lesson is complete, together we will use w3schools' (www.w3schools.com) Online HTML Editor. This will allow us to code HTML and see the results live. W3schools is a fantastic educational resource used by millions all around the world from students all the way to professional software developers. It does display minimal advertising (usually one small image per website), but the website is 100% safe to use, and I encourage parents to browse through it and bookmark it!

Learning Goals

Websites, apps, video games, drones, and robots! The world of Computer Science is vast but what most don't know is that there is a lot of creativity involved! Design your own logos for your websites, model your own figures and characters for your video games, or create an animated YouTube video. Learning computer science can be an extremely creative and rewarding experience!
When I was around 12 years old, I jumped into a huge, nasty dumpster in my apartment complex and dumpster dove the first computer that I learned to code on. From there on out, messing with computers was my favorite hobby. I excelled in Computer Science and achieved several awards in programming competitions. I got an awesome opportunity to TA a first year Computer Science class, and it proved to be an extremely rewarding experience which is part of why I love teaching today!
I attended school for a Bachelor's in Computer Science and Engineering but after a couple of years, I decided that I wanted to become a fully certified teacher straight out of college. Not only that, but I wanted to get certified in a different State than the one I lived in, so I saved for a while, packed my bags, and moved! I am enrolled in school, and currently pursuing a B.A. Science Education. Once I graduate, I will be seeking to teach High School Science and Computer Science.
I have worked some pretty cool jobs before from Web Developer, IT Technician, and I ran my own small computer repair business. I am now currently working on a video game I plan on releasing later on! Throughout my experience, I have learned a lot about the real world of IT and software development and since I love teaching, I decided to make that my job! I am excited to be here, and I am excited to teach about the awesome thing’s technology can offer from making websites, videos games, virtual reality, and of course, Minecraft!
