Homework
It would be helpful if the student could practice these decoding strategies at home after class as well in a playful manner. It would be also helpful for a parent to read a book to the child each day, on his/her level and then have the child to try to read it back to the parent.
Assessment
From time to time, I will be doing informal assessments to see if the child uses the strategies that he/she has learned in class to read words.

Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
What will be taught? In this class, I will be teaching the student strategies to help him/her decode words and read the words in sentences. We will also do activities where we manipulate letter sounds in words, activities with rhyming words, and other reading activities.
What topics will you cover? In this class, we will go over how to decode words as a way to learn how to read. To help with this decoding, the student will be taught the 5 phonetic skills that are listed at the bottom of the class description. The student will also learn how to mark letters in words to help them remember how to sound out the letters. For example, the student will learn how to mark the vowels in a word with an "x" under the vowel, how to mark the guardian consonant in a CVC word with an asterick (*) above the guardian consonant, and how to mark the short vowel sound above the vowel that has the guardian consonant next to it.
How is my class structured? My class is structured in a way to help the student be interactive and engaged. We will both be using a white board to decode/ mark the letters in words to help the student have a visual of how to sound out words. After marking the word and reading it, we will practice using the word in a sentence. We will have interactive games to help the learner stay focused and engaged.
What's my teaching style? My teaching style is doing lots of hands-on activities that help the student be involved in the class. As a visual, I will use Google Slides that I have made to present games that I have made, as well as present videos that help reinforce what we are doing in class. I will also be using a small white board (and the Zoom white board at times) to show the student how to mark letters in words to give the student strategies that will help him/her figure out words easier.
How much will the learners be interacting with each other? This will be a one-on-one class. The teacher will be interacting with the learner.
Is there any required experience or knowledge that the learner needs to have? Yes, the student should know all the letters and sounds for this class.
Here are the phonetic skills that we will be working on.
Phonetic Skill # 1: When one consonant and nothing more follows the vowel, the vowel will be short. (Example: cat, hop)
Phonetic Skill # 2: When the vowel is followed by two consonants and nothing more, the vowel will be short. (Example: last, jump)
Phonetic Skill # 3: When a vowel stands alone, no consonants following it, that vowel will be long. (Example: go, I, she)
Phonetic Skill # 4: When a word ends with a silent "e", the first vowel will be long.(Example: bake, hope)
Phonetic Skill # 5: When two vowels are adjacent, the second vowel is silent, and the first vowel is long. (Example: wait, boat)

Learning Goals

The goal for the learner is to learn strategies to help him/her be able to read words in an easier manner.

Hello! My name is Mrs. Kay and I have been enjoying teaching online with Outschool since the Fall of 2021!! I have a Masters degree in Elementary Education and a Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education. I have been a Kindergarten teacher for many years and the last couple of years teaching, I was also teaching ESL students online early in the mornings. I retired in 2021 from the public school system but wanted to continue to use my teaching skills. I was fortunate to find Out School and be able to continue teaching children in a less restrictive way. In the below video, I demonstrate how I would teach reading online to young children.
As far as my teaching philosophy, I believe that all children can learn but they learn in a variety of ways. I like to address each type of learner by using a variety of teaching methods. For example using tactile/hands on objects helps the kinesthetic learner and using lots of pictures to teach with helps the visual learner. Young children especially benefit from
using a variety of teaching methods. In my years of teaching, I have taught many children how to read but one of my greatest loves has been working with children in the early stages of the writing process. If you are interested in me helping your young learner with the early stages of writing, please check out my “Little Writers Workshop “ class where I teach young children how to use a picture that they draw to make a story.
 A little bit about me:
I was raised a farm/country girl and enjoy being around nature. My home that my husband built is surrounded by lots of woods and wildlife. The hobbies that I enjoy include cooking, baking, and gardening. In the summer, I enjoy canning fresh vegetables from our garden and going on fun trips with my family. This year, I will be the Art teacher for the school that I recently retired at so I am looking forward to this new adventure. I also hope to see your child on Out School!
