Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
Authors/illustrators often use speech bubbles that allow their characters to talk. We will read and discuss Mo Willems' book, Knuffle Bunny to explore the author's craft of using speech bubbles. Then students will apply their new knowledge of speech bubbles to their own story!

First we will read the highly engaging story, Knuffle Bunny. This story catches the attention of children. Students will have the opportunity to hear the teacher read the story dramatically, which improves their reading fluency and comprehension skills. We will stop to discuss the story and analyze the author/illustrator's use of speech bubbles.

Students will verbally tell a story and make a "self-to-text connection" to the character, Trixie. Then they will illustrate their verbal story. Students will identify the character in the story and draw a speech bubble to add the character's words. Last students will have the opportunity to share their stories, illustrations, and speech bubbles with the class. The teacher will model each step of the lesson first, so students have a visual example to help them feel successful at the activity.

This lesson can easily be adapted for learners of all levels. The teacher has experience teaching students of varying ability levels, and welcomes all learners to her classroom!

Please Note: Permission has been received by the publisher to read and use Knuffle Bunny in our class. However, this class is not endorsed or promoted by the author/illustrator.
