Learn to Code With "Blockly" Coding in Code.Org!! Express Course

Ages 10-14
Live Group Course
This an intro to coding course designed for students from 5th grade to 8th grade and will challenge them throughout each lesson. The lessons build on each game or maze and teach them the basics of coding with blockly coding (java based).
Live video meetings
1x per week, 12 weeks
5-12 learners per class
55 min

What's included

12 live meetings
11 in-class hours
Homework
1 hour per week. I will assign whatever code they did not complete for the day or if they miss a day for homework. There will be two lessons taught per day and they should beable to complete most of it, but students work at their own pace and may need to work at home or away from the group zoom.
Progress Report
When they finish the course they will get a Certificate of Completion and they can print it out from there. They will need to save that as a PDF so you can print it.

Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner Level
This is a beginner to intermediate level of blockly code learning that they learn completes with a group of students. The students will learn the basics of coding concepts while learning how to solve coding puzzles and mazes in their coding workspace. The students will watch the intro video for the lesson with me and I will ask questions for comprehension and demonstrate the level 1 code. Then they will code level one, and we will do level 2 together. Then they will do level 3 independently, and continue on from there. I will not require that they can complete the whole lesson since I cannot see their screens and move around the room like I would in the classroom; however, I will ask them to complete at least about 70% of the lesson for an instructional level of mastery. I will have them share their screen often and I will walk them through debugging of that particular lesson.

Learning Goals

The objective for the students is to be able to understand the concepts practiced each class session through coding. The success criteria is if they solve 60-70% of the lessons for the day.

Syllabus

12 Lessons
over 12 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Programming with Angry Birds and Debugging in Maze
 1. In this skill-building lesson, students will develop sequential algorithms to move a bird from one side of a maze to the pig at the other side. To do this they will stack code blocks together in a linear sequence, making them move straight, turn left, or turn right.
2. In this skill-building lesson, students will encounter pre-written code that contains mistakes. They will need to step through the existing code to identify errors.
55 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Creating Art with Code & Swimming Fish with Sprite Lab
 1. In this skill-building lesson, students will take control of the Artist to complete drawings on the screen.
2. Students will program a simple animated underwater scene in this skill-building lesson.
55 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Making Sprites
In this skill-building lesson, students will work through a series of programming levels on the computer, finishing with an open-ended “free play” task where they can build whatever they like. Students will write programs and learn about the two concepts at the heart of Sprite Lab: sprites and behaviors.
55 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Sprites in Action & Mini Project: Virtual Pet
 1. In this skill-building lesson, students will work through a series of programming levels on the computer, finishing with an open-ended “free play” task where they can build whatever they like. Students will write programs that respond to timed events and user input.
2. Students will create an interactive Virtual Pet that looks and behaves how they wish in this mini-project lesson. Students will use Sprite Lab's "Costumes" tool to customize their pet's appearance. They will then use events, be

I have taught computer programming since 2019 and have seen hundreds of kids be successful with this course. It does get more challenging, but I will work with them and walk them through the program step by step. There are also several other coding options that I can give them on the website if the lesson is too challenging.
