Class Experience

The class will start out with a discussion about coping skills. We will discuss why we need coping skills, when we need them and what happens if you don't have positive coping skills. The students will be asked for ideas of what helps them calm down or work through a stressful situation. We will have a brief discussion about how coping skills can differ for everyone and the most appropriate coping skill is dependent on the needs of the person. We will also talk about having many skills available to us and being ready to implement a healthy and positive coping skill when the need arises.

We will turn to the unicorn coloring page with the "color-by-coping skill" index. We will review the effectiveness of each coping skill listed and the likelihood that skill would be effective for each learner. We will spend time coloring and chatting along the lines of developing positive coping skills. The class will end with an optional presentation of each student's coloring page and I will encourage them to seek out healthy coping strategies now and in the future.

Early reading skills are required for this class, although a motivated learner with pre-reading skills would be able to successfully complete the coloring page and participate in the discussion.

Learning Goals

The students will be able to identify several positive coping strategies that may work for them during stressful times.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
I encourage parents to review their student's coloring page and ask them what they learned in class.
Supply List
The Coping Skills Unicorn Coloring page will be provided.
Each student will need a printer, printer paper, and colored pencils or crayon in the following colors: pink, yellow, purple, orange, green and blue. Markers can be used, but I have concerns about markers making the printer ink bleed.

    Teacher expertise and credentials
My passion is child development and I feel a personal commitment to assisting young people and helping them grow strong. I have personally witnessed so many young people struggle with handling difficult situations appropriately and turning to unhealthy means of coping. I believe the conversation about this needs to start when they are young. I have worked professionally with children for 15+ years and I have Master's Degree in Counseling.
