This course is meant to cover the basics of high school chemistry. It is an 18 week long course starting with an understanding of chemistry. The course will be structured with a review of concepts followed by examples. It will be interactive with lessons on PowerPoint and on the whiteboard. Week 1: Week of February 28: Getting Started with Chemistry. Understand the basics of chemistry, the System International (SI) unit of measurement, and significant figures. Week 2: Week of March 7: Atoms, Ions, and Molecules. Learn the periodic table, elements, subatomic particles, chemical formulas, naming compounds, ionization energy, electron affinity, and periodic trends. Week 3: Week of March 14: Moles and Equations. Learn to balance equations, Avogadro's number and molar mass, percent yield, and mole problems. Week 4: Week of March 21: Aqueous Solutions. Learn molarity, solubility and precipitation, acids and bases, oxidation-reduction, and titration. Week 5: Week of March 28: Gases and the Gas Laws. Learn the gas laws, the kinetic-molecular theory of gases, and gas law problems Week 6: Week of April 4: Thermochemistry. Learn the energy of reactions, enthalpy, and Hess' law. Week 7: Week of April 11: Electrons. Learn light and matter, Bohr's model, and electron configuration. Week 8: Week of April 18: Lewis Structures and Bonding. Learn Lewis symbols, electronegativity, ionic bonds, resonance, and bond energy and bond length. Week 9: Week of April 25: Solutions, Solids, Liquids, & Intermolecular Forces: Learn the temperature and pressure effects on solubility, different types of intermolecular forces, properties of liquids and solids, and phase changes. Week 10: Week of May 2: Kinetics. Learn reaction rates, rate laws, and catalysis. Week 11: Week of May 9: Chemical Equilibria. Learn equilibrium and equilibrium constants. Week 12: Week of May 16: Acids and Bases. Learn Bronsted-Lowry acid and bases, strength of acid and bases, acid base properties of salts and oxides, Lewis acid and bases, and acid-base equilibrium. Week 13: Week of May 23: Entropy and Free Energy. Learn the three laws of thermodynamics, entropy, Gibbs free energy, and free energy and reactions. Week 14: Week of May 30: Nuclear Chemistry. Learn nuclear reactions, nuclear stability, half life, mass/energy conversions, fission and fusion, and nuclear decay. Week 15: Week of June 6: Review and Summarize
