Description
Class Experience
In this course, we will get familiar with the language and culture of the Romans by studying life in ancient Pompeii and Herculaneum. Starting from scratch, we will learn basic vocabulary and sentence structure, look at English words that come from Latin and discover Roman civilisation and mythology. We will be working on the following: - Understanding how languages work - Improving English vocabulary - Learning about the past - Become more fluent - in English... and in Latin! - Presenting our opinions in an eloquent manner, using evidence
I am a qualified teacher with more than 15 years' experience introducing young learners to the language and history of the ancient world. I have trained in Philosophy for Children as well as Dyslexia and Foreign Language Teaching.
Students will be expected to work in between the sessions to be able to stay on track and enjoy the course. For this purpose, they will be directed to the Hands Up course on Primary Latin, which is available online. This will also mean visiting the websites suggested in the resources and practising grammar and vocabulary as well as creating personal responses to what we are learning - there will be a choice of media, from singing to drawing or cooking.
Students will need pen and paper, and any supplies they want to use if they want to produce artwork or cook something as part of their homework -there will be plenty of flexibility with the projects.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
I will assess the progress weekly by observing their performance in class. There will be self-assessed mini-tests.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Some of the myths or aspects of Roman life depict violent attitudes. Parents can look at the materials ahead of the course to decide if it is suitable for them.
