Class Experience

***I also offer these knot tying skills as individual classes.

This 4-part class is for beginner students with little to no knot tying experience who want to learn to tie 4 knots: square knot, bowline knot, two half hitch, and taut line hitch.

The class will include informational slides about the knots, step-by-step pictures, guided video, live demonstration, and practice time. I still remember how excited I was to master tying my first knot! In class, we will focus only on one knot at a time in order to achieve true independence and mastery when tying knots. Taking the time to truly learn about and practice one knot tying skill at a time will lead to greater retention over time.

The participants will need 2 pieces of rope to practice in class. I suggest using 2 nylon rope pieces that are each 1 meter (3 feet) long and 6mm (1/4 inch) thick. I prefer rope at this thickness for learning to tie knots because it allows each knot to be easily examined and also untied to allow the rope to be used again. Look for rope that is flexible and not too shiny or slippery. Avoid polypropylene rope – commonly blue or yellow – sold for water-ski towlines. It is not pleasant to handle and knots don’t hold well. The learners will also need to have some type of dowel, walking stick, broom handle, etc. to use when tying the knots.

I’m excited to help you learn knot tying skills, so grab your ropes and come tie knots with me!
