Description

Class Experience

In this class, we will survey the evolution of jazz from its roots (i.e. blues, ragtime, etc.) through its multiple sub-genres of today.

Jazz Styles and Sub-genres that will be discussed: Blues, Ragtime, Early Jazz (New Orleans and Chicago), Stride Piano, Boogie-Woogie, Swing, Bebop, Cool Jazz, Modal Jazz, Free Jazz, and more!

Artists that will be highlighted: Robert Johnson, Bessie Smith, Scott Joplin, Buddy Bolden, Joe "King" Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, James P. Johnson,...

Students will learn how to distinguish between various jazz styles, time periods, and sub-genres based on musical characteristics and representative jazz artists.

No assigned homework. I will provide suggested listening lists that some students may find helpful to listen to during the week in between each class.

Teacher will provide any needed materials for the class.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

We will play some review listening games and challenges to review class material.

1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
