Intermediate Level
These are "ongoing" classes, and learners are welcome to join at any time! This book club will focus on learning various literary skills as they apply to the Harry Potter series. Not all skills will be focused upon during each lesson; however, characterization, plot structure and setting relevance will always be discussed. Since each class is designed to reflect three chapters in the Harry Potter books, learners will not "lose" instruction if they join "late" or leave "early." Each lesson is designed as a stand-alone learning opportunity and will be a rich experience regardless of student attendance rates. I will utilize both direct instruction as well as discussion during these classes, and all learners will be encouraged to share opinions, connections and reflections during session. Soft social skills such as leadership, active listening, supportive speaking and respectful disagreement will be taught through the entirety of these classes. The classes will all follow the following schedule: The first part of the class will be set aside for club member bonding. This time is essential in establishing the trust necessary for a truly safe Socratic class The next part of the class will be direct instruction of the focus literacy skill of the day as well as characterization, plot and setting. The final portion of each lesson will allow all students to share reflections, opinions or their own connection to the focused section of the book. All students will be encouraged share; however, no learner will be expected to speak at any time.
