Class Experience

Want to give your learner personalized and fun Japanese instruction in a supportive environment?

Are you looking for your learners to learn not only vocabulary words but also how to ask and answer questions in Japanese from day one?

My Japanese teaching provides your learner with individualized, engaging Japanese speaking and listening practice. I use original, unique teaching materials created from my private Japanese teaching experience and my Japanese heritage.

*** If you are interested in multiple learners taking this class at the same time and/or alternative class times, please message me with your specific situation ***

Experienced tutoring helps students learn topics such as basic Japanese conversation skills, reading and writing skills in Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji, as well as Japanese grammar clarification, pronunciation, geography, and culture.

My tutoring style targets students aged between 7 and 18 years old with minimal to some Japanese experience to build a foundation of Japanese knowledge in a fun and patient way.

I will use a Google Slides presentation to present foundational topics and information and adapt it to your students' ages and interests (for example, singing, props, and movement for younger students vs. reading and additional conversation practice for older students) to help your learners engage with and understand the content differently. I also utilize videos and pictures relevant to Japanese culture and topic sentences to give visual support to the learners. I will also use some Japanese songs to help students expand their interests while practicing Japanese pronunciation in a fun manner.

I encourage learners to participate regularly nonverbally and verbally at their own pace but aim for ample verbal output throughout each tutoring session. I also prioritize age-appropriate phrases, activities, and songs to help learners feel capable and confident in learning a new language. Finally, I regularly encourage correct pronunciation while still providing ample positive reinforcement.

Materials/ Technology: It is recommended to have some blank paper and the learner’s favorite writing utensils (Pen, Pencils, Colored pen, etc.) to take notes and practice Japanese writing during the tutoring session.

Students will see Google Slides and YouTube materials shared on the screen during the class. Depending on the lesson, students may have printable handouts and/or digital Google Jamboard worksheets (no login required) to use during class. I will also send some flashcards/vocabulary lists regularly via Quizlet, Neopod, or Google Docs so that students can continue practicing Japanese at home.

Please note: This class is not a full immersion tutoring class; some English will be used.

About Me: こんにちは! My name is Mayumi, and I am a native Japanese speaker with extensive experience in teaching Japanese language, culture, and music. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, a Master's degree in Music Therapy, and over 15 years of teaching and therapy experience in both therapeutic environments and homeschooling. I also studied educational technology in graduate school, where I learned how to create engaging and effective online courses. Additionally, I have researched Waldorf educational methods, how to use music to assist with brain function (neurologic music therapy), and cybersecurity. As a homeschooling mom of one, my passion for teaching comes from a deep desire to inspire and educate.

I am passionate about sharing the rich traditions of Japan, from the powerful beats of taiko drums to the delicate melodies of the shinobue bamboo flute, and a string instrument called shamisen. I also enjoy engaging students in Japanese arts and crafts, including origami, temari ball making, and traditional Japanese doll crafting. Additionally, my love for anime music allows me to connect with students through their favorite songs and shows. I also love Japanese food and traveling throughout Japan.

My Classes: All the materials in my classroom are designed with kids in mind, ensuring they are engaging and effective. I rigorously test all my classes with students before launching them. My strength lies in researching diverse learning methods and topics to motivate learners and help them overcome the fear of challenging or new subjects. By selecting engaging topics and the most suitable teaching methods, I can address students' individual needs effectively.

Accomplishments: I have created curricula for children and adult learners to teach various life skills through music for over ten years in many settings, including public schools, private schools, homeschools, community groups, hospitals, hospices, and behavioral health treatment centers. Having homeschooled 1st to 7th-grade students, I am well-versed in the challenges and needs of homeschooling families. My infinite passion for learning drives me to share the joy of education with future generations.

Educational Philosophy: Every child deserves access to a fun and effective education. Recognizing that every child learns differently, I strive to accommodate various learning styles. Above all, my goal is to put a smile on every child's face.
