Class Experience

Konnichiwa! こんにちは! I am Amy sensei. Welcome to Guided Japanese Learning: the Montessori Approach to Learning Japanese. This class is designed in response to the child's natural tendency to want to write, draw, read, play games, and interact with their peers. If you learner likes to write and draw this class is recommended. This class is Part 2 of a two class series.
(Please reach out to me if your learner needs handwriting support).

An effective highlight of this class: We continue reading funny and highly effective Hiragana Mini-Readers. Each mini-reader focuses on a few hiragana sounds at a time which allows for a high level of repetition without feeling tedious. Each learner will have 1:1 time to read a mini-reader of their choice. Learners are amazed they can already read a book starting in this class while enjoying the entertaining illustrations and storylines.

I have created handmade hiragana cards learners can print at home. Five new sounds will be shared each week. We will use these cards to write and draw. I recommend playing games with the cards 5-10 minutes per day. In Montessori we “isolate the difficulty” by breaking memorization into smaller parts allowing the learner to gain confidence with the content. We will use our Hiragana cards to "build words".

Each weekly lesson will touch on the following routine.
1. Greetings in Japanese
2. Practice/Flashcards, Song
3. Hiragana Writing and Drawing
4. Games that support speaking, reading, and writing
5. 1:1 Reading Time using Fun Hiragana Mini-Readers.
6. Sharing Time

Instructional Language: Please note, this class is not an immersion class as instruction will be in English and Japanese, especially when explaining about Hiragana and new vocabulary. Learners are allowed to ask me questions in English. However, they will also be learning classroom phrases they will hear me say in almost every class and overtime they will learn how to respond in Japanese. Shapes, Colors, Body Parts and simple Adjectives will be incorporated naturally into drawing time together.

If your learner misses class, the video will be provided so your learner can watch and draw before the next class session. I am incredibly grateful if your learners background is quiet so they can engage in communication practice and enjoy socializing.

I am Amy Nishikata. I can't wait to meet you and be a part of your child's learning team.

I specialize in two areas on Outschool.

~Teaching small group and private online Japanese language lessons.

~Teaching young learners how to read in English aligned with Montessori individualized learning and the Science of Reading.

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Japanese from UCLA and I lived and taught in Japan for more than ten years.

I am an AMS certified Montessori Teacher. I hold additional certifications in Early Childhood Science of Reading and Montessori Applied to Children at Risk.

All combined I have more than 30 years of lead classroom teaching experience in the US and Japan and four years of online teaching experience.

My Japanese lessons incorporate games, songs, puppets, drawing, speaking, writing, reading, VR trips to Japan, videos, and storytelling.

I create and share beautiful hands-on materials to enhance learning shared with your learner weekly.

My private reading lessons are designed for each learner and focus on building strong phonemic awareness and phonics foundations in a joyful and positive way with puppets, poems, songs, and hands on learning.

Online learning can be dynamic! My online classroom is brightly lit and I use a high quality HD camera and top of the line microphone and side cameras to create a clear and more immersive experience for learners.

All of my classes are designed to touch the heart and mind of the child. My teaching style is joyful, kind, flexible, and observant. I support intrinsic learning and your learners ideas.

My classes are described as highly engaging, humorous, and effective. I have over 250 five star reviews from families from around the world. I have many learners who have been with me for years.

Starting in January 2024, I will be sharing my much loved learning to read in English program on Outschool. 1:1 Reading Tutoring for children ages 4-7.
Please message me on how I may support your learner.

CLASS PREPARATION POLICY:

My classes will have printouts provided on a weekly basis. Please print out so your learner can fully participate. I will notify you beforehand so you will have time to print. I cannot offer refunds on classes due to unpreparedness.
However, I understand things sometimes do happen. In the case of an emergency or event out of your control a refund may be issued on a case by case basis. Please message me if you feel like your case fits this policy. For my classes with young learners who need assistance, as per Outschool policy, thank you for sitting to the side, off camera to support your child with the computer and any materials when needed. In my classes, your child will need a writing surface and space to move. I will send a short materials list so you will have what you need for each class. Ideally, even the youngest learners can learn to mute and unmute their own devices. Thank you.

SIBLING POLICY:

If you have more than one child that is interested in taking my classes you will need to make sure you pay for each child to be enrolled separately. However, once you have enrolled each child separately your children are more than welcome to share a device screen to complete the class. If you are wanting a private class for siblings, please contact me so I can send you a private link that I will adjust to allow for more than one child/ren within the same family to enroll.
