Ever wonder what you would do if you were to be stranded on an island? Join me and Karana as we learn to survive all alone on an island in Island of the Blue Dolphins, by Scott O'Dell. In this class, we will read and discuss 6 chapters in each session, meeting 1 time a week for 6 weeks. The students and I will take turns reading aloud the book and I will provide comprehension and critical thinking questions that will be discussed as a class after each chapter is read. Students are encouraged to participate by discussing their answers to the questions and listening respectfully as others give their answers. Each class will have a discussion of relevant topics found in each chapter. Topics/critical thinking skills include: Vocabulary/Phrases Cause/Effect Emotions Sequencing Point of View Problem Solving Making Predictions Inferencing Visualizing Summarizing Day 1: Introductions. Read Chapters 1-6 and discuss teacher-provided questions. Day 2: Share Projects and finish discussing chapters 1-6. Read and discuss Chapters 7-12. Day 3: Share Projects and finish discussing chapters 7-12. Read and discuss Chapters 13-18. Day 4: Share Projects and finish discussing chapters 13-18. Read and discuss Chapters 19-24. Day 5: Share Projects and finish discussing chapters 19-24. Read and discuss Chapters 25-29. Day 6: Share Projects and finish discussing chapters 25-29. *** Don’t let the number of chapters scare you. They are short. The students will be encouraged to read unfinished chapters and complete an activity between sessions. These activities will be a combination of hands-on creations, drawing, writing, and so on. Their activities will be shared at the beginning of each session, starting with session 2. ***No reading needs to be done prior to the first meeting. ***Please see Parental Guidance section.

Parental Guidance
Please be advised that there is one battle scene in the book, and the main character must kill in order to survive. The main character is constantly threatened by wild dogs and dangerous invaders. Karana (the main character) witnesses the death of her father, and little brother is killed by wild dogs. Learners who are prone to anxiety or are sensitive to such things need to proceed with caution.
Island of the Blue Dolphins is a fictional book. Therefore, it cannot be relied upon to accurately portray culture or history.

All students must purchase their own copy of Island of the Blue Dolphins, by Scott O'Dell.

Hello!
I am so excited to be working with your child(ren)! As a former elementary school teacher of 11 years, I know the challenges of helping students thrive in a large classroom. This is why I am excited to bring unique and fun lessons that are tailored to the small class, where learning can happen!
I will be teaching creative arts, such as puppetry, painting, and arts and crafts. I will also be teaching core subjects, such as Reading and Writing, Science, and Math with the use of storytelling, visuals, and hands-on activities, as I believe these are the best ways in which children (or anyone, for that matter) learn. Children learn best by doing, so that is what I bring to the online classroom.
But, who is this person teaching my kids, you may be wondering. As I mentioned, I was a classroom teacher for 11 years, but when I had my first baby, I knew I belonged at home with her. So, I left the classroom to raise my daughter, and now my son as well. My daughter is now in Kindergarten, and I am blessed to be able to teach her myself. But, as a life-long learner and educator, I can't keep it all to myself. I have to share it with others! So, I look forward to working with you and your kids here at Outschool!Reviews
