This class is fun for students who are going into physical sciences or earth sciences, as it gives them a jump start on learning about the Earth and its weather. During the class we will be conducting My class is structured as follows: 1 - warmup/review, sometimes a jam board, blanket, or quizzes. 2 - write the agenda on a jam board 3 - start with the first topic 4 - quick Q&A/stretch 5 - cover the following topic 6 - conduct a multisensory- activity 7 - exit ticket I will be teaching using multiple methods. Some will require a student to do a project focusing on a topic. Science should be FUN (the same as math). I teach with the student, not to the student. For each course, I always do a pretest and a post-test before we start studying for the final. This way, I know if I need to reteach a topic. My teaching style is all multisensory. Just because I am at a computer doesn't mean a student can't use their hands, use touch, ears, eyes, and nose.
Learning Goals
Students will understand and be able to read the instruments used by the NWS
Students will be able to determine what type of weather is associated with (1) cloud cover (2) and Fronts

8 Lessons
over 8 WeeksUnit 1: The Water Cycle and Clouds
Lesson 1:
What is the water cycle?
The students will examine the water cycle and how our water can change states of matter and recycle itself. There are several steps to the cycle that assist in the rock cycle.
150 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Types of Precipitation and how they form in the troposphere.
students will learn the difference between rain, freezing rain, hail, snow and sleet. We will do a short lab (ice water and ziplock bag needed) to demonstrate how clouds, and/or fog is created.
150 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Fronts and how they are represented on a weather map
Students will learn about stationary, cold, warm and occluded fronts along with the weather associated with the fronts as the move from West to east, and start predicting what it occurring when the fronts meet. This involves us reading current weather maps from the NWS and NOAA.
150 mins online live lesson
Unit 2: Inclement Weather and Predictions with a station model
Lesson 4:
What type of instruments collect data for the weatherman -1
We will look at all the tools meteorologist use to make predictions. Including ISO bars, Maps they can find from the NWS. Items include thermometers, barometric pressure, humidity, wind chill, wind direction and speed, and even weather balloons. This will be a two day lesson because there is a lot of 'stuff' we use to predict the weather.

Learning Needs
I am not one of those teachers who just lectures and say go look it up. I use multiple modes to deliver content, games, word searches, guided notes, and experimen I believe with any population, slow is fast, but I never dumb down curriculum
Parental Guidance
There will be no precautions in the class.
Pre-Requisites
Understanding the basic concepts of weather and the ability to read graphs typically occurs at the end of 8th grade, when students are getting ready for 9th grade.
Supply List
You will need at least blue and red paper, or card stock. A ziplock bag and ice water. The book will be posted later, I don't think it will be more than $20
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
We will be using a mix of PBS and NOVA to expand the topic, also. Students will be receiving maps from my live NWS dashboard.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from MA Santa Clara University, PhD Syracuse Current Teaching Certificate
I am a Certified American Meteorology Society Teacher. I have taken classes on atmospheric and ocean studies and am well on my way to a PhD. Also with my undergrad in mathematics and physical science this is a great fit. At my other school, I still have access to the weather station so I can show current weather from Columbia SC. This worked out great when we had Hurricane Debby and Helene roll through here.
