Throughout eight lessons, students will examine core readings, including modern and contemporary selections that illuminate a variety of themes, and practice their writing.

Welcome to AP English Lit
My lesson is about explaining what the AP English Literature and Composition test is about and how it is formatted. We will learn about common Advanced Prep vocabulary. This lesson includes a deconstructed poem stanza activity.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Characterization in Literature
This class will feature a lesson on characterization. Students will develop a thesis statement and practice more Advance Prep vocabulary.

Setting in Literature
Small-group: setting & structure analysis in WALL-E (scenes and themes); Mini-lesson: setting (slides); Whole-class: discussion of Common App and Coalition for College prompts (college application essay preparation guide); Vocabulary practice

Lesson 4
Tone and Syntax in Literature
Whole class activity; Independent: reading & annotation of “This Is Just to Say”; Mini-lesson: syntax, point of view & tone; Small-group: collaboration to punctuate “This Is Just to Say” for different tones

Bringing It All Together
Independent: journal (Write about a situation in which you said you were sorry but really weren’t); Whole-class: review of AP Classroom MC formative assessment results data and question stems; Small-group: support for correct answer and discussion of process of elimination for AP Classroom MC questions; Guided reading/listening & discussion of excerpt of Heart of Darkness Chapter 1 (Audible recording); Independent : annotation of selected scenes from Chapter 1; Small-group: AP Exam prompts

By the end of this course, students will have developed a foundational understanding of AP English literature, including advanced vocabulary, syntax, literary analysis, writing techniques, and how to write a thesis statement.
