In this 6 week writing course, your child will learn to work through the entire writing process in an organized manner. The teacher will provide handouts for the student to use during class, and will make a great resource for them to use with future writings. Week 1: The Art of Brainstorming Students will learn how to brainstorm in an effective and organized manner to help them keep all their thoughts and ideas neat and ready to use in their writings. Week 2: The Rough Draft Students will learn how to take all their brainstorming ideas and turn them into a rough draft. This process will allow the student to see what the art of brainstorming can really do to make their stories easier to write! Week 3: Revising Students will learn that this step allows them to revisit all their hard work in the first two steps and check to make sure it all makes sense for their audience. Did you write clear details? Is it written in the best order? And students will learn to take ordinary words and switch them for words that will make their stories shine! Week 4: Editing Students will learn that it was okay to write a very rough draft because we can fix all the mistakes. We will look at spelling, sentence structure, punctuation, word choices, and capitalization. Week 5: Publishing Students will create a neat copy of their work, and illustrate if they would like to do so. Students will begin sharing their story with their peers. Week 6: A Job Well Done Students will share their stories with their peers! By this time, students have gotten to know each other and should feel comfortable sharing their amazing stories in our safe environment. This is an important step to wrap up working hard and smart on a story from start to finish. Homework: Students will be given weekly homework. This is crucial in making sure that each student is ready to move to the next step.
Learning Goals
Students will have the opportunity to learn about each step of the writing process and then practice each step to ensure they understand and can replicate the process after the course has ended.
