US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
Please do not sign up for a same day class if you are the sole student. Instructor will need a 48 hour notice. Thank you so much! 🔴 Enter a play-n-learn environment. Drag-&-drop, circle & trace -- while reading our rhyme stories. Let's play life using 🖼️ visuals & 🚀props to help us read. Start, stop, and restart this class whenever needed. ◼ PREREQUISITE: Learners should know their CVC words and SOME OF the first grade sight words for this class. Examples of first grade sight words are: an / any/ by / take / stop / think / walk /were / when ◼ METHODS USED: Phonemic awareness; Phonic skill development; Context reading; tactile learning ◼ WHAT IS THE STORY ABOUT? The story is ongoing, in easy rhyme format, with lovable characters. Stories are about friendship, kindness, and building mental awareness and strength. The visuals will allow the little ones to drag-&-drop, circle & trace -- while reading our rhyme stories. ◼ SIMULATIONS: 1. Open-the-magic-box (words of the day) 2. Use interactive visuals (day's adventure) 3. Drag-n-drop while reading a rhyme 4. Role-play with imaginary characters and props 5. White board (write a word chunk or sight word) ◼ *SAMPLE CLASS* STEP 1. PHONEMIC AWARENESS Prop: Open-the-magic-box! The first step to learning how to read is PHONEMIC AWARENESS which is auditory. While speaking (about the visuals in our story) we will develop phonemic awareness to decode sounds in a word. Phonemic awareness helps learners identify the sounds in a word such as "sheep." There are three sounds in "sh-ee-p." The goal is to isolate new words for phonemic awareness. Output: Breaking up the word into phonemes AND writing the word down independently on paper STEP 2. PHONIC SKILLS Prop: Flip-the-card! Output: Read the word then compare to how you spelt the word earler (during the phonemic awareness step). Next, we will develop our PHONIC SKILLS which is in written form. Learners identify written sounds as one or two letter sounds within a word. The goal is to read the same words used during phonemic awareness. STEP 3. READ SENTENCES Prop: Drag-n-drop with rhymes! Output: Read the sentences and analyze the story together while dragging-n-dropping. Yippee! Now we can READ SENTENCES that are 3-5 words long. These sentences use the words we read earlier together in the lesson. Read and speak-up! This is your chance to say what you think of the characters; and what you want to drag-n-drop in the story. With the help of "context reading" learners will drag objects into the correct place in the visual. STEP 4. FUN GRAMMAR Prop: Word jumble! Output: Reorder the sentence and identify a grammatical unit. We will jumble then fix the word order of the above sentences together! We will visit topics such as subject-verb agreement; replace adjectives with new adjectives; and, identify action words and maybe even change their tense. ◼ Build speech confidence skills while reading: 1. Read with intonation to help with in-depth understanding 2. Encourage opinions and creative thoughts 3. Encourage child to initiate / respond / follow-up in a conversation 4. Role-play to develop empathy 5. Give time for each child to speak up about the rhyme 6. Active listening and reinforcement by instructor ◼ How we build reading skills: 1. Read sight words (words read in "one-go" without sounding out individual letters. These are high frequency words.) 2. Recognize silent letters (underline the silent letters) 3. Read word chunks (like: ch, sh, th, wh or "cat" in catch) 4. label vowel team patterns (like: ai, ee, ew) and more... Try us out now!
