Class Experience

US Grade 11 - 12
Intermediate Level
The IEW University-Ready writing course is ideal for high school students wanting to learn effective note-taking strategies, write summaries and essays, cite sources using various style guides, write papers of varying lengths, use literary devices, and write on-demand essays.

Students must have working English grammar knowledge, know how to form a complete sentence, and have a solid understanding of how to format an essay. No prior IEW experience is required, although students may find it beneficial.

Throughout the course, students are provided with clear assignments. I will use slides and examples to demonstrate tips and tools for writing an abstract, citing sources, using various literary devices, and arranging content.

Student essays will vary from 1-paragraph to 3-page papers. Students are also assigned papers based on minimum word count. Students may present one essay throughout the class.

I will be the editor for students who wish to submit a rough draft for review before turning in their final draft. This step is strongly encouraged. I will work with students throughout each assignment, helping them polish their work. Students must be prepared to accept constructive feedback and make necessary adjustments.

Students may wish to watch the accompanying DVDs for additional instruction, but this class does not require that.
