IEW Frontiers in Writing (Part 1)

In this beginners IEW theme-based writing class, students learn to write using intriguing topics such as Halley's Comet, the Mona Lisa, and the Wild West. This IEW writing course teaches the nine units of Structure and Style.

Class Experience

Frontiers in Writing draws students to write about intriguing topics such as Halley's Comet, the Mona Lisa, the Wild West, and other fascinating topics. At the same time, students learn to write using IEW's Structure and Style method. 

This class is recommended for fifth-grade students and up. Frontiers in Writing completes all nine IEW units. 

Students must be able to read at a fifth-grade level or higher.

Students will have homework to turn in. Students must be able to type and turn in completed essays. 

I will edit turned-in assignments, and learners will receive feedback.

Students will complete the first half of the book in this class.

In this class, students will:
-Practice making keyword outlines and narrating a story using their outlines
-Practice writing a paragraph from notes
-Practice retelling a story in their own words using their outlines
-Practice creating a title for their story
-Practice summarizing a reference
-Practice writing from pictures
-Practice summarizing multiple references
-Practice inventive writing
-Practice using dress-ups, decorations, new vocabulary, and sentence openers to make interesting sentences
-Practice using English grammar

Using slides and interaction, I will teach the lesson or concept the students will work on during class. 

I will model lessons and work with students in class to brainstorm ideas. 

Students are expected to complete assignments after each class and should expect to spend time completing assignments outside of class.

Consider adding Fix It! Grammar Level 2 to this course.

Parental Guidance
Parents may need to assist students with tying and submitting their essays.
Pre-Requisites
Students should read fluently at a fifth-grade level or higher. This course covers all nine units of the IEW method. It is recommended for students in the fifth grade and up.
Supply List
IEW Frontiers in Writing student book: https://iew.com/frontiers-in-writing-student-book-only Students may choose to use Google Docs to type their papers. These should be saved as a PDF and uploaded in the classroom. All papers must be typed. At times, the Nearpod app will be used. Students will be given notice for class sessions that will utilize this.
