Life can be challenging – for children no less so than for adults! Children encounter both successes and failures as they grow and expand their horizons -- everything from riding bikes to reading to making new friends. Developing a positive disposition towards learning – which, of course, includes the challenges that we all face from time to time when learning something new – is an important step to take along the path to becoming a person who can persevere and see challenges as opportunities for growth. Join BoBo, an adorable cat puppet, as he engages children in both conversation and song to explore the many things we would each like to learn how to do, the challenges that we face in learning them, and the strategies we use to manage them. The session will open with BoBo singing a song of welcome. Next, BoBo and the children will engage in conversation about the kinds of things that each would like to learn how to do. Then, BoBo will sing a song called “I Can, I Can, I Know I Can” – a song in which BoBo encounters a challenge in learning how to do something. As BoBo becomes frustrated, he practices using social-emotional skills such as taking a deep breath, identifying his feeling of frustration and using positive self-talk to encourage himself to try again. After the song, BoBo will ask the children to discuss a time they experienced a challenge in learning something and what they did to help themselves contend with it. Finally, BoBo will help the children draw connections between the strategies they may already be using to manage the challenges they face in learning new things and the skills of breathing, identifying feelings and using positive self-talk. An important outcome of this session is that children will develop a greater awareness that they already have a (growing) set of skills to use that help themselves persevere when challenges arise in learning new things. With the delightful puppet BoBo using song and conversation to engage children, this session promises to be full of smiles, laughter and learning about an important topic related to emotional self-regulation and perseverance. Teacher expertise and credentials
Greetings! I’m a National Board Certified kindergarten teacher of many years who loves learning and sharing my love for learning with 4, 5- and 6-year-old children. I teach shared reading sessions and social-emotional sessions for young children with a fun and interactive style that includes song and colorful images. I believe that children learn best when they have the opportunity to explain their thinking, therefore I am certain to include interaction between students and between students and myself with each class session. I have two cats named after cloud formations (Nimbus and Arcus) who sometimes become a prop to illustrate a point in my classes! Come join me in growing your child’s love for learning!
