In our first class, we will be using a step by step-type instruction so students are able to learn an effective way to brainstorm their thoughts in an organized manner. Students will be provided an engaging and informative piece of information on the animal of their choice, prior to class that they will want to read through, allowing them to be prepared to start preparing for their expository essay. In our second class, we will take our organized information (from our pre-write) and start creating a rough draft, in paragraph form, to produce an amazing expository essay. Next, in our third class, we will share our writing pieces, review what we have learned about our chosen animal. After this, Teacher Christie will introduce how to create a lapbook in which then the students will create independently. This project will be one that students will do on their own time and will present in our final class. I can't wait. In our final class, we will share our projects, discuss our favorite part about the course, share what we learned about our animal, and spend the remaining time discussing questions, and next steps or interests. Per students' requests as to their choice in animal, information will be sent individually to the students to help them prepare for their first class together.

As a veteran teacher of 20 years, I have used the "Step Up to Writing" planning tools when teaching all genres of writing. I have found that this way of organizing thoughts allows students to build their confidence in writing, and gain a love for the subject. The end product students can produce using this method has been unreal.
