Class Experience

In this one-time class, students will learn how to succeed in a college math class. I have been teaching math at a large public university for three years now and will share some tricks of the trade for students to do well in this setting. Topics will include how to correctly assess math skills in order to enroll in the correct course, how to take notes and ask questions during class, and how to interact with a math professor or instructor in college. We will also have time for a short question and answer session, where students will be able to ask questions to a college math instructor (me!).

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Amanda (she/her/hers), and I am so excited to teach you. I've wanted to be a teacher my whole life, and that's what I went to college to become. I graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in mathematics and minors in education and Japanese. From there, I attended graduate school at Oregon State University, where I earned my Masters degree in mathematics with my thesis about how differential calculus affects the mathematical confidence of women. I am now a full-time math instructor at a public university, and I love teaching math!

Besides math, I have a lot of other interests and hobbies that I also teach classes on. I enjoy gardening, baking and cooking vegan dishes, brewing my own kombucha, and learning about how I can lessen my negative impact on our environment.

I want to teach lessons that are engaging and hands-on; students are naturally curious, so I encourage asking questions! I want all students to feel welcome in my classroom so that we can foster a truly inclusive environment.

In case you'd like some fun facts about me, here they are! I have a 4-year-old German shepherd/lab mix dog named Athena who keeps me on my toes. I have a large backyard garden where I grow a lot of vegetables for me and my husband. And, I love houseplants!

I hope to see you in one of my classes soon!
