Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 2
Beginner Level
I will begin class by reading the story How to Catch an Elf by Adam Wallace. During the reading we will discuss the following
~ who the author is and what an author does
~ who the characters are and what is a character
~ where is the setting and what is a setting
~ I will ask students to make a hypothesis about what might happen next during the story
~ at the end I will ask students about what happened in the story to check reading comprehension.

After the story we will complete the worksheet Elf Traps. Students will have to recall what traps were used in the story to try to catch the elf by coloring the pictures of the traps used. We will do this together. Students will need a coloring utensil for this.

Once we have finished going over the worksheet. I will allow time for students to create their own trap for catching an elf. Students will design their trap by sketching out a design on their paper. If they are able to they can also write a sentence describing their trap.

We will end class by sharing a couple of designs of those who wish to share.

Learning Goals

Students will have an understanding of what a character, setting, and author is. Students will also be able to recall events from a story as well as retell what happened.

Students will embrace their creativity.

Other Details

Supply List
Students will need access to a printer, to print the assignments as well as either crayons, colored pencils, or markers.

If students do not have a printer they can still participate in the class. They will not be able to color in the traps but they can participate in the discussion.

If they have plain paper at home they can draw for the 2nd assignment.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
