Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Intermediate - Advanced Level
Environmental research encompasses many fields of science such as microbiology, climatology, marine biology, paleontology, and ecology just to name a few. Each of these fields contributes to our overall understanding of the complexities of our environment and how over time they have evolved and changed in many ways. In this class, students will be given an introduction into the field of marine geochemistry and learn about how different analysis, such as carbon dating and isotope geochemistry, have contributed to scientific research in areas of studying events altering the environment, such as understanding coastal and marine sediments and how instances such as oil spills have impacted the environment for years to come. They will also learn about some of the methods and analytical analysis used to evaluate isotope data and why it can be very challenging.

Week 1: What is isotope geochemistry and how does it contribute to research
Week 2: Nuclear waste and why it is so challenging to evaluate
Week 3: Evaluating trace metals in marine sediments and what can be learned from them
Week 4: Plate tectonics

Students will work with Nearpod, an interactive software program that allows students to participate in discussion boards, answer short quizzes, and watch interactive videos that pertain to course material.

Syllabus

4 Lessons
over 4 Weeks
Lesson 1:
What is isotope geochemistry and how does it contribute to research
In this lesson, students will be provided with a brief introduction into the world of marine geochemistry and how isotope analysis can be applied to research.
Lesson 2:
Nuclear waste and why it is so challenging to evaluate
In this lesson, students will learn about the challenges of evaluating nuclear waste due to nature of radioactive isotopes.
Lesson 3:
Evaluating trace metals in marine sediments and what can be learned from them
In this lesson, students will be provided an introduction into analyzing trace metals utilizing methods such as isotope dilution.
Lesson 4:
Plate tectonics
In this lesson, students will be provided an overview of the science of plate tectonics and how it relates to geochemical research.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
My entire life I wanted to explore the ocean and the environment. I have always had a great appreciation for the processes that are not completely understood and the unknowns that have yet to be discovered in the environment. At the beginning of my professional career in research, I worked as a naturalist on a whale watch boat and as a laboratory technician working on environmental clean-up projects such as water and land pollution. Then I moved into my dream job of being a research chemist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in marine & geochemistry where I was able to be in the foundation of the research community and learn from many amazing scientists & researchers who devoted their lives to exploring the mysteries of the environment as well as protecting the animals and organisms living in it. For me, working as a student mentor with graduate and post-graduate students, made this experience one I will always cherish. As a teacher, I want my students to be excited about what they are learning and with my background in research, I will work extra hard to make sure that if there is an aspect of a topic that a student is interested in, I will make every effort to alter my lessons to include those topics.
