Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
About the teacher:
I have been studying herbs and natural remedies for many years. I am very well versed in nature, herbs, and anything that can be used to help issues. We transformed our home into almost a completely natural home. We use natural products in cooking, lotions, deodorants, medicine, and anything else we have around the house. I have a passion for using nature and respecting the uses in nature. I wanted to host a camp to educate on the benefits of using natural plants in everyday way. If your student wants to learn about herbs and plants that are good for cooking, medicine, or any other reason, come join!

**Younger and older students are welcome, but please be nearby on the project day. Also message me to confirm their age is okay.

About the class:
We will spend a few days learning about all kinds of plants, beneficial and poisonous. We will have some fu discussion. I will also provide a few recipes at the end of the second class that your student can do with the products they need for this class.

Class 1
- Introductions
- History of herbology
- Essential oils and their uses
- Edible Herbs and their uses

In Class Activity: We will plant 3 herbs together. They should have these seeds before class starts. I post a complete supply list in class, but you can also find it below. Have your plants ready to go.

Home Activity #1: Make cute labels for your plants and label them.
Home Activity #2: This week you will collect dandelions and we will make dandelion tea in class. I will also post the recipe in the classroom.

Class 2
- How to grow herbs in different ways
- Perennial vs annual and dicot vs monocot
- External use vs Internal use
- Teas and herbal benefits (elderberry syrup)

Home Activity #1: Go on a walk. Find a flower or plant you are unsure of what it is and look it up. Find out what it is, can you use it for anything. There will be a guide in your classroom.

Class 3
- Cooking vs Medicine
- Fungus Kingdom (mushrooms)
- Plants found in nature that can be used as well (edible versus poisonous)

In Class Activity: We will have some fun trivia to see if students can guess plants from pictures.
In Class Activity: We will make herbal lip balm.

-This can be put in any kind of small container. Parents may need to be present to help. Students need access to a stovetop. This requires melting things and dealing with hot wax. We will also have some final review and discussion on plants and what we have learned.

I will link some of my favorite container options below. I will also link my favorite options for each of the ingredients. These can all be used to make balms, and so much more. In the final class, I will link some of my favorite recipes for things I use everyday that you can use these same items with. Please have ALL supplies ready and be in the kitchen ready to go. I have taught a similar class to my charter students and they loved it. Students love creating something they can keep and I love teaching about the importance of plants and how they grow. In the world we live in, it is vital to understand farming and how we get our food sources. It is also important to teach students how to grow plants so they can always grow their own garden if they want.
