Class experience

This class is taught in English.
Jaime (she/them) has extensive sewing experience and currently teaches sewing in-person at a local school. She successfully leads her young learners through projects from beginner to advanced. Jaime also has experience in the world of children’s theater costume design.
Jaime is also a homeschool mom who brings warmth and empathy to her classroom. She is passionate about a wide variety of artistic endeavors and music. Her learners benefit from her tremendous support and knowledge.

Ruth (she/her) is a versatile and skilled seamstress with a passion for creativity. Ruth's expertise spans across various sewing projects, from crafting quilts and clothing to delightful toys. Her flair extends to embroidery and intricate hand-stitching techniques, adding unique touches to her creations. During the pandemic, Ruth exemplified her community spirit by collaborating with a local hospital. She took the initiative to produce instructional videos on mask-making, aiding in the effort to combat the shortage of protective gear. Alongside a dedicated team of volunteers, Ruth's contributions resulted in the production of over 30,000 masks—a testament to her commitment to service and innovation. Beyond her sewing talents, Ruth fulfills the role of a dedicated homeschooling mom to her middle schoolers. In her cherished moments of leisure, she immerses herself in the world of literature, indulging in a diverse range of genres from historical fiction to captivating sci-fi adventures. Ruth's passion for creativity, coupled with her altruistic spirit and love for learning, embodies a truly inspiring individual.
This project is a machine-sewing-based project. Participants should have a sewing machine in good working order and a basic understanding of their sewing machine. If your learner does not have a basic understanding of their sewing machine, we highly recommend a 1:1 session with one of our sewing instructors before taking this class. This will allow them to get better acquainted with their machine and be set up for success in a group project class.

You can enroll your learner in a 1:1 sewing machine walk-through session here: https://outschool.com/classes/sewing-machine-basics-EC4cU91u

Fabric: Cotton or flannel fabrics are ideal for this project. Please pre-wash and dry your fabrics before class. If either of your fabrics is red, we would recommend washing them separately. Red dye is notorious for bleeding during the initial washing and can turn anything else in that load pink!

⅓ yard cuff/accent fabric
¾ yard main fabric
(Note: These measurements will generate a standard-size pillowcase.)

Threads and Notions: We’ve shared a few links for products. You don’t need those specific ones. We’ve included them as examples and to make shopping easier, if you’d like. However, if you have a similar item on hand, you are welcome to use those!
- 100% polyester thread
- A spare sewing machine needle - They can break, so it is always good to have a spare on-hand.
- Straight pins or clips - https://a.co/d/55vsI4l or https://a.co/d/5nCbqrj
Good quality scissors (Good quality isn’t code for expensive…. Quality, budget scissors exist!) https://a.co/d/2Q8h1Vd
- Iron and ironing board or pad - An ironing board is ideal if your learner wishes to progress with sewing and tackle more advanced projects. However, an ironing pad will work great for this project. https://a.co/d/hfV7b4m
- Measuring tape - https://a.co/d/bvwWkWT

Note: If you’re an educator or a homeschool parent, Joann Fabrics in the US offers an educator discount. You can stack that discount with their coupons as well. Download the app, bring your educator ID, and save on class supplies.
