Advanced Level
Is your student bored with typical school reading and needing a challenge? Do you want to channel your child's energy into a positive and successful lifelong love for reading and research? This class is an advanced private reading tutoring session where I work one on one to meet a student at their level and then rise above that level by challenging their comprehension, spelling, and vocabulary while enabling their ability to think deeper and outside of the box. I give a reading assessment at the beginning of the class and choose reading material that matches both the learner's reading level ability and their interests. For example, I may dive into a version of Alice and Wonderland with a six-year-old and do a full novel study with a ten-year-old learner. I may challenge them to read outside their genre of choice by choosing a book we can read in class over a short period to test it out (for example a student who loves Alien Collective may be surprised that they enjoy parts of Sherlock Holmes). My teaching style is encouraging, calm, and peaceful...inviting students to relax into doing the best work that they are able to do while watching their confidence soar. My goal is to keep students engaged and excited to participate in their own learning throughout our lessons. In this session, we read together, use the glossary for vocabulary words, work on spelling, discuss text-dependent questions, take quizzes, and work on advanced grammar skills. As a school librarian, tutor, and reading coach my first desire is to see my students love literature and love to look deeper. I have taught this class to many students around the world including many places across the United States, China, and South Korea. ESL students are welcome in my classes.
Learning Goals
These sessions are for advanced readers and focus on vocabulary, expressive reading, and comprehension as well as advanced grammar. We will also read a variety of material across genres to deepen their interest in all types of books.
