In this one-time class, students will learn how to use a protractor to 1) measure a given angle and 2) draw an angle given its measure. We will focus on drawing and measuring angles between 0-180 degrees. Students will also learn how to classify angles as either acute, right, or obtuse. Together, we will draw a few angles and measure a few angles on a practice sheet I provide in a pdf. I am a National Board Certified elementary school teacher, and I have taught math every year of my 28-year career. I have been thoroughly trained in the Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) approach to mathematics. It's very important to me that my students make sense of their mathematics, develop strong conceptual understanding, build a solid foundation of skills, enjoy their math, gain confidence, and find the subject interesting, engaging, and meaningful.
Students will need 1) a protractor and 2) a practice sheet that I will provide in a pdf. Though many types of plastic protractors can be easily found online, I recommend a clear, 6-inch, 180° protractor that has markings for each degree and a hole at the bottom center that can be placed over the vertex.
