Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 7
One of my favorite parts of being a teacher is supporting students in the classroom. In this twenty-five-minute session, I will be customizing the lesson to the needs of the student. One of my strengths as a teacher is breaking things down so that students master each step before moving on to the next step.

When a parent signs up, I ask the parent to message me anything I need to know about the child. It is also helpful for the parent to message me the name of any curriculum (textbook name) that the child is using. Every school teaches math or reading differently, so knowing the curriculum can help me teach the student similar to the way they are being taught in school.

I will also ask parents to message me about how they would like the class run. There are many options.

Option 1: I can reteach or pre-teach content taught in class for the student. I ask that you let me know at least a day ahead of time what the student is learning in class. I will design a lesson plan based on this. Usually, you can message your child's classroom teacher and tell them that you would like to know upcoming topics in class.

Option 2: I can review the previous year's content with students or challenge them with activities. This will be a custom lesson plan. If you select this option, I will go through the standards for the grade level (information that students need to know) and design lesson plans.

Option 3: I will help students complete their math or reading homework. I ask that you take a picture of the homework at least one hour before class and send it to me through Outschool messenger. I will use this time to look over the homework and plan for your child's class.

How do I teach my classes?
I teach my math classes by screen sharing or using a virtual whiteboard. This allows students to see the math clearly. I often encourage students to try to annotate and write on the screen as well, so that I can see how they are solving the problem. It also allows me to catch any errors the student may make.

I teach reading by going through stories or doing activities based on the student's needs.

How do we do scheduling?
This class is marked as a one-time class. If you would like to have classes with me more than once, please message me. I will create a private class at an agreed-upon class time. I also have some flexibility with my scheduling. If there is not a class time that you need, please message me.

Other Details

Supply List
If a student has a computer they can use their finger or a pen to write on, I encourage them to use this in class. I like to try to have students annotate on Zoom. If a student cannot easily annotate, I ask them to use paper or a whiteboard and hold up their work. Students should practice holding writing up to the camera before class to make sure that everything can be seen.

Hello! I am Sara Howell. I live in a small town in Pennsylvania. I am PK through sixth-grade general education teacher and PK- 12 grade special education. I graduated from Millersville University with a degree in both early childhood education and special education. I have worked in infant through eighth-grade general education and special education classrooms. I have taught over 5,000 ESL and reading classes online. This fall will be my seventh year teaching online. I love teaching ONLINE!

I like to create classes that engage and support all learners. I use informal and formal assessments to see what a student needs to succeed. I want to not only teach students content but help them develop a lifelong desire for learning. One of my strengths as a teacher is breaking down the content for students in an easy and understandable way. I try to make sure that students have mastered basic skills before we move on to the harder concepts. My classes are designed to move at the pace the students in the classroom need.

In my free time, I love to spend time with family and friends.

Feel free to contact me about how I can support your child in the classroom.

Please note that Outschool is my job, so I have a limited refund policy on my classes. I spend time preparing for the class. Outschool states that teachers may wait 10 minutes in the class, then cancel it if there is no student present. Please message me right away if you are having trouble.
