Class Experience
In this comprehensive geography course we will cover the physical and socio-political features of our planet. Including each of Earth’s seven continents and its five named oceans (now including the Southern/Antarctic). Fun fact: technically there is only one global ocean which covers 71% of Earth’s geographic area. Our course will be organized by size. We will begin with the planet. Then cover the oceans. Then we’ll move on to the continents in order of size: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Oceana. *Week one we will begin with the world, its landmasses, life zones, and oceans. *Weeks two and three: Asia, and Africa *Weeks four, and five: North America and South America *Weeks six and seven: Antarctica and Europe *Week eight: Oceana. We will discuss the continents as well as the countries and cultures which reside upon them. Students will become familiar with maps and other important tools of geography. Learners will be instructed through video lectures, readings, and activities. Each week will include a class discussion, short research project, and active learning opportunities. A typical week will consist of: Sunday: Video lecture and guided lesson. Professor will post project files and resources for the week's assignment. Weekly discussion topic posted. Wednesday: Professor will post a quick "Knowledge check" to ensure learners are on track Learners should post their response to the discussion topic by Wednesday (respond to classmates by Friday) Friday: Learners will turn in completed assignments. This course touches upon the five core tenets of Social Emotional Learning: Self awareness: This course gives students the opportunity to consider their wants and needs and how those wants and needs are impacted by global, social, and environmental systems. Self management: This exploration of geography asks students to recognize customs and behaviors the people in each global region engage in, including their own. Social awareness: This course suggests we are all embedded within a larger global network which means we must act in ways which are sympathetic and empathetic. This course also suggests our actions carry consequences which may impact other humans, animals, and biomes. Relationship skills: The lessons and videos highlight our relationship to our global community. Responsible decision making: This course suggests the decisions we make each day impact our larger world. Photo by Kaboompics .com from Pexels
